Think Dutchess Honors Trailblazers in Workforce Development, Innovation and Community Service at 2024 Business Excellence Awards

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Visionaries, leaders and organizations driving positive change in Dutchess County were the focus of this year’s 2024 Business Excellence Awards (BEAs), hosted by Think Dutchess Alliance for Business on October 24, 2024. Held at the Culinary Institute of America, the event brought together more than 200 business leaders, community advocates and government officials to recognize the winners for their contributions and significant impact on Dutchess County’s economy and community.

This year’s winners included a diverse range of organizations, each demonstrating excellence in their respective fields. DAY ONE Early Learning Community, Inc., in Poughkeepsie, received the Grand Award for its innovative Teacher Apprenticeship Program (TAP), which addresses the region’s workforce development needs while providing hands-on experience in early childhood education. The center’s growing influence has garnered national attention, including a visit from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and $1.2 million in federal funding from U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to expand the program.

Dr. Peter Grant Jordan, president of Dutchess Community College, was recognized with the Special Recognition Award for his transformational leadership in expanding career training programs and forging strong partnerships with local businesses to help students succeed. His creation of the region’s first Mechatronics Lab is just one example of his dedication to workforce development and collaboration.

Anderson Center for Autism, based in Staatsburg, was named Large Business of the Year for its leadership in autism services, both locally and globally. With over 900 employees, Anderson serves more than 600 individuals annually and is poised to further expand its impact through a $10 million project to build a state-of-the-art training facility for autism services.

Boutique Wines, Spirits & Cider in Fishkill was honored as Small Business of the Year. This family-owned business has become a regional leader in craft cider, offering more than 300 selections and creating a unique customer experience. Its collaborations with local businesses, including the Culinary Institute of America, and its ability to draw visitors from across the country have helped elevate Dutchess County’s craft beverage industry.

Fit and Fun Playscapes, based in Poughkeepsie, was named Innovator of the Year for its groundbreaking work in creating inclusive play environments that promote physical activity for all ages. Known for its creativity and commitment to wellness, the company’s expansion into Dutchess County has allowed it to continue developing new products that support health and wellness through engaging, fun play experiences.

Mid-Hudson Works, a nonprofit that provides job training and employment opportunities for veterans, people with disabilities, and those re-entering the workforce, was named Nonprofit of the Year. Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2023, Mid-Hudson Works has continuously adapted to meet community needs, including launching a coffee roastery to teach entrepreneurial skills and create new opportunities for its participants.

In addition to receiving their awards, each winner was honored with a letter of commendation from local, state, and federal officials, including U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan, NYS Sens. Michelle Hinchey and Rob Rolison, NYS Assemblymembers Didi Barrett, Anil R. Beephan, and Jonathan G. Jacobson, Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino, Dutchess County Comptroller Gregg Pulver, Town of Fishkill Supervisor Ozzy Albra, Town of Poughkeepsie Supervisor Rebecca Edwards, City of Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers and Town of Hyde Park Supervisor Al Torregiani. These letters underscored the importance of the winners’ contributions to economic growth, workforce development and community enrichment.
